   About

2021

In 2021, access to creative studios in
St Helens was at risk, with the announcement that Platform Studios (established 2015) would be demolished under the redevelopment plan for the town centre.

Artists in the town knew that regeneration can only happen when creativity is thriving. For this to happen, people needed space to be creative.
With funding from local government, Artist-led St Helens opened up Street and a Half for artists for 108 days, engaged over 433 people through a free public events programme, and facilitated 415 hours of equipment use for creatives. 8 artists who took part in the programme then took on space at Street and a Half. And while all this was happening, our online audience grew by 25%.

In 2026, we’re working out sustainable and regenerative ways of working with artists in our studio and the surrounding community.

Our ethos:

  • By artists, for artists (this includes, visual artists, performers, writers and makers)

  • To benefit artists and creative people in and around St Helens

  • Supporting the creative development of artists, by increasing stability and combatting isolation
